Memories

During the 1963 Western Pacific Cruise of the USS Ranger (CVA-61) I participated in the many opportunities to visit the cultures of Hong Kong and Japan. These two pictures published today were taken as 35 MM Slides during the cruise.

I recently decided that in order to maintain my story that I should have these slides scanned into a digital format so that I could share with Family and Friends in today's world.

This is a picture of myself sitting on a rail at Victoria's Peak in Hong Kong, B.C.C. as it was known in 1963.

I had 96 slides scanned and the company put them on two CDs. They also provided me with a software link where I could read and also write the images.

The two I publish today were much darker as 35 MM Slides. Because I could download the digital images to software editing programs I was able to improve on the images.

This is a picture of myself as I prepared to enter a Hotel during a Special Services Trip in Japan during the 1963 cruise.

The image on the 35 MM Slide was much darker. I was able to edit the picture so I can now share it via Facebook and other media to my Family and Friends.

The scanning of the slides was performed by a Company I found on the World Wide Web. I sent in my first order to ascertain how well they performed. I am very impressed and share this link with you today in case you are looking for a firm that will update your memories to digital. They do slides, prints, videos to digital. This firm provided fast service and allowed me to proof the scans prior to completing the order. I was allowed to reject 25% of the scans which would have resulted in a lower price for the total order. I sent 100 slides, however there were only four that were not acceptable.

I was and remain impressed with this firm. In fact I sent my second order to them yesterday, January 24, 2012.

"Rick Santorum Wins Iowa Caucus"

Today, January 2, 2012 the Flower Child will publish this headline. It is the headline that will appear in the print media on the morning of January 4, 2012.

I think that Rick Santorum has a very good chance of winning the Iowa Caucus because he has demonstrated that it is possible to run a low budget campaign. I understand that he is currently campaigning in Iowa with the use of a pickup truck while the other candidates are using motor homes.

From my point of view he is demonstrating the fact that one does not need to expend great sums of money to run an effective campaign. I understand that he has already visited all 99 counties of Iowa earlier in his campaign. I also understand that a vast sum of caucus attendees have yet to make up their minds.

With these facts in mind I think that many Iowa caucus attendees will vote for Rick Santorum simply because he is putting into action what so many know that this Country, the U. S. A. needs to succeed in the future. We must all learn to do more with less and in my mind Rick Santorum is clearly demonstrating that fact.

As a previous campaign of a well regarded and well respected Georgia citizen of many years a go stated we need a change in Washington. A change that Rick Santorum is currently modeling in the Iowa Caucus Campaign.

Thirty Years

Retirement

from the

United States Navy

You can quickly see the ships and the time I served in each. I retired from the U. S. Navy on December 31, 1981.

This picture was taken at U. S. Navy Housing in San Pedro, California while I was assigned to the USS John Paul Jones (DDG-32). I think it was taken in 1976.

I have fond memories of my time in the U. S. Navy. Yes, there were bad days; however in the overall scheme of events, the good days certainly outnumbered the bad ones. Besides that who wants to remember the bad days.

I was a Yeoman and enjoyed several periods of shore duty. My first shore duty was at Naval Command Systems Support Activity at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington D.C. I was assigned to this Command after my tour in the USS Ranger. My next duty was on the Staff, U. S. Naval Forces Europe - 1966 - 1969. While there I worked in Central Files and the Plans and Policy Division.

Following my tour of duty on the greatest Anti-Submarine Warfare Destroyer in the Atlantic, the USS Sellers, which was homeported in Charleston, SC; I was assigned to the Staff of Director, Navy Recruiting Area Three in Macon, Georgia. The name was was later changed to Commander Navy Recruiting Area Three. For my final sea tour I was assigned to the USS John Paul Jones on the West Coast. A tragic motor cycle accident in May of 1977 resulted in six months of limited duty and I was then assigned to the USS Hull for my final sea tour prior to my final shore tour once again in Macon, Georgia on the Staff of Commander Navy Recruiting Area Three.

I enjoyed my 21 years of U. S. Navy Service and made three major deployments. Two to the Western Pacific on the USS Ranger and the USS Hull. My only deployment off of the East Coast was while I was assigned to the USS Sellers to the Mediterranen Sea.

It just not seem that one year has already passed since we last celebrated the Birth of Jesus Christ our Savior. This scene was acquired about six years ago and I have enjoyed it very much.

The words on the scroll in the forefront of this scene have these words:

"O Come Let Us Adore Him"

I would suggest that these words apply to all of us today as well as they did when these lyrics were first possibly penned in the 13th Century. These words are the chorus to the Christmas favorite "O Come All You Faithful."

We spent our final day at Hollywood. It was a fun filled day and also one that was very casual. The younger ones took the Hollywood Tower Ride while we enjoyed Ice Cream with the Grand Children.

The Family Christmas at the Condo prior to anyone getting up.

We visited the Magic Kingdom in the late afternoon and early evening.

Of Course, this is Space Mountain.

The Grand Children as well as us adults had to pay our respects to Minnie and Mickey.

You can view our two Sons in this image as they face the Castle. We have one Tennessee Fan and one Georgia Fan.

The Castle was adorned with many lights which changed colors. The evening parade was well attended.

From my point of view, this Eagle was the highlight of the evening parade. The drama and the lights made the parade an event that I had to view.

I captured this view of the early evening fireworks as we made our way out of the Park. An interesting and a very exciting day for everyone of us.

Disney World 2011 Visit

Day One

The first three images focus on the Landmark Hotel at Disney World, the Grand Floridian. The interior views show the ceiling with the interesting lights and the Christmas Tree which was at least thirty feet high.

We stayed in a condo and we enjoyed the company of our two Sons and their respective families. We even had a Christmas Tree. Here you see the author of this Blog fabricating a Candy Cane.

The two shots above focus on the Disney themed decorations. Each of these contained a special surprise for our Grand Children. We celebrated Christmas during our stay at Disney World.

So far this Christmas I have received several gifts. A DVD - Pearl Harbor, which I watched on December 7th, a New Shirt and a New T-Shirt as well as the item shown above. Now everyone knows what the "Flower Child" appreciates.

The two six-packs of Rasberry Flavored "Two if by Tea" drinks was the thoughtful gift from a Sibling who knows what type of radio shows I listen to.

As we all prepare for the Celebration of Christmas 2011 I would like to wish all of the readers of "The World This Week" a Very Blessed Christmas Season and a Wonderful 2012.

It was a delightful trip and also an opportunity for all of us to be together to Celebrate Thanksgiving with a lovely meal and to also celebrate Christmas with a Family Gift Exchange.

Payroll Tax Debate

United States of America

I may be uninformed, however I think that the Payroll Taxes our President and the U. S. Congress are debating is the same thing as the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) which is used to fund Social Security Payments.

Now, before we proceed with this discussion I will inform you that I have been receiving Social Security Payments for eight years and ten months.

I remember that in the recent past our Elected Leaders decreased the amount of payment that an Employer and an Employee pay on their salary. This decreased amount is set to expire at the end of 2011. Recent discussion/debate between our president and the U. S. Congress has focused on the fact that this reduced level of payments should be extended to eliminate the impact of take home pay deductions for our Nation's Workers.

This may appear to be an appropriate means of spurring customer spending as the Country needs to spur economic growth. Yes, it does sound good and our current elected leaders are now stating that failure to extend this reduced level of Payroll Taxes will have an estimated $1000.00 impact for each employee. In short they will have $1000.00 to spend on customer goods which is reported as being necessary to improve our economy.

Please anticipate these current employees working to retirement and then depending on Social Security Payments to finance their life style. I am confident that with decreased Payroll Taxes or FICA payments that soon it will be determined that Social Security Payments/Benefits will have to be decreased!!!

What will happen then? There will most likely be a dramatic downturn in the economy. Yes, the short term benefit of continuing the current decreased Payroll Tax Deduction may allow economic growth; however what happens in ten, fifteen or twenty years when these same employees commence drawing reduced Social Security Benefits?

From my own point of view it appears that we are being set up for a vicious downward spiral of income for the very people who may now achieve short term benefits while they fail to anticipate the long term decrease in their own benefits.

Of course if you are a thinking person who can comprehend the "big picture" you will quickly realize that this is simply an opportunity for the current President to bolster his re-election chances. No one will have to suffer any short term decrease in income if they will simply vote for him. Thus the current debate is simply one that can be briefly stated as "an opportunity to buy the votes of the current electorate."

A sad situation indeed. As I composed this entry today I recalled a story by Hans Christian Andersen entitled "The Emperor's New Clothes."

One summary of this story is that the Emperor's situation caused the adults to believe the Emperor was indeed clothed. It took a child to say "But he isn't wearing anything at all!"

Is this the situation with the current debate regarding the Payroll Tax extension? Only those who think of the long term consequences can actually see the true facts!!! I hope not.

Is it to late to contact your duly elected leaders? I sincerely hope not.

Vineville Academy of the Arts

Fine Arts Department

This past Thursday, December 8th I attended the "An Old Fashioned Holiday" at Vineville Academy. I called myself arriving early for a 6:30 P.M. performance at about 6:07 P.M. The parking lots were filled and upon entering the Auditorium I quickly ascertained that this would be a Standing Room Only (SRO) event.

WOW!!! I thought to myself. This is great. The performance commenced at 6:30 P.M. and the Students at Vineville Academy performed several Violin selections employing the Suzuki method. Great performances.

Nest we hear the Primary Chorus who sang selections appropriate to the season. From my point of view the Ballet performances by two groups based on music by Peter Tchaikovsky was the high point of the event.

The Vineville Voices then sang several selections. The program concluded with two groups performing Tap Dancing to musical selctions by Harry Connick, Jr.

A wonderful evening which certainly showcased the excellent talent of the Scholars of the Vineville Academy of the Arts.

The Neel Reid Story

This is a scale model of just one of the Neel Reid Homes in Macon, Georgia. It is the headquarters of the Federated Garden Clubs of Macon, Inc., and also known as "The Garden Center" located at 730 College Street in Macon.

The Neel Reid Display which is located at this headquarters is the feature of the next six images in this Blog Post. The Garden Center is open four days a week, Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. I would suggest that you take the opportunity to visit the museum quality display of the life of Neel Reid which is featured in two rooms of this historic home on College Street. This home is just one example of the fine homes that Neel Reid designed during his brief career in the early 1900s. To learn more please take the time to visit the display.

I would suggest that you set aside about one hour to read all the information that is contained in these six displays as well as view all the pictures.

Saint Joseph's Catholic Church

Recently the Members of the Middle Georgia Camera conducted a Field Trip to this Macon, Georgia Landmark. At least ten members participated in this Field Trip. It took about fourteen years to construct this beautiful church in the late 1800s. Of course everyone took an abundance of images. I selected several and sent them to a fellow photographer for his comments.

The comment for these first two images was: "Nice flow and good angle of view."

The comment on the above image was: "Good Arch View"

One could spend an entire day here capturing the light. The early morning on a bright sun filled day would we wonderful to capture the East Side of the Sanctury. Because we had to schedule around Mass Times and also a Private Baptism we took our images between 11:30 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. on a Cloudly Saturday.

A wonderful photography opportunity that was enjoyed by all who participated. Thank You to Saint Joseph's Catholic Church.

What Next?

Paying to Watch Super Bowl Commercials!!

Yesterday, November 24, 2011 I observed this bundle on my drive way here in West Bibb County Georgia. It turned out to be the "The Telegraph" which is printed in Columbus, Georgia and delivered in Macon and Middle Georgia.

I had never seen one single issue take this much space. I knew to expect "Black Friday" flyers and as I opened the bag my expectations were true. No problem with that. This is free enterprise at work and the best of capitalism. Letting potential customers know what will be on sale.

However, as I read my newspaper and stacked up all the "sales flyers" I recalled that on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 I had paid for an additional thirteen weeks of "The Telegraph." No problem with that. I usually renew my subscription every thirteen weeks. Then I also remembered that somewhere on the renewal notice where I read that for the newspaper to be delivered on certain days that there would be an additional $1.00 charge. If I recall correctly November 24, 2011 was one of the days where the $1.00 would be charged.

If my memory is correct I fear that when I receive my January 2012 Cox Communications Bill that I might also be charged an extra $1.00 for the opportunity to view the commercials during the Super Bowl which will air on February 5, 2012.

Somehow this just does not seem appropriate. The consumer being charged an extra fee to be able to stack "newspaper sales flyers" for great sales events or even worse, possibly being charged an extra fee to view coveted electronic media commercials for broadcast events which draw high viewing numbers.

I hate to even consider how the electronic media may now charge us "commercial fees" so that we can view and enjoy the 2012 Summer Olympics from London, England.

From my own point of view as a consumer and an avid reader of the print media and a viewer of the special events on the electronic media I do not appreciate being forced to pay for the advertising some may desire to charge me the customer for.

I know, I know that I can terminate my print media subscription and if the electronic media follows the lead of the print media in charging to deliver commercials I can terminate my cable subscription.

However, somehow this does not seem to be the American way!!!! By the way I support the concept of the free market; however I also support the opportunity to remain informed via the various media outlets that are available to the public. In fact I also consider it my obligation as a citizen of this country to be informed; however having to pay for commercials seems to be very inappropriate.

I post this entry today to stimulate thinking and to also simply point out that we the general public may be considered a source of revenue who will allow this practice to happen.

I know that there will be some who do not see the connection with the next picture as being appropriate to this post. It is a picture of "Paperwhite Blooms and Rosemary Stems" which adorned the Thanksgiving Table at my home. Please note that there is no additional charge to you for the opportunity to view my artistic side.

I grew these plants and assembled this informal arrangement for the enjoyment of Thanksgiving Holiday Guest. I did not charge them either. However, should you so desire you can mail me a $1.00 fee for the opportunity to enjoy the above picture.

"A Date Which Will Live in Infamy"

The President of the United States made this statement on December 8, 1941 and he was talking about the "Attack on Pearl Harbor" by the Japanese which they conducted on December 7, 1941.

As we prepare to remember this even which happened seventy years ago I am sure that many like myself will only have the recorded history of this day or the story of this event as it was relayed to us by our Parents.

I have visited Pearl Harbor several times during the course of my U. S. Navy Career and I have memories of standing at attention on the flight deck of the USS Ranger (CVA-61) as we passed the Arizona Memorial. I know that I will never forget.

However during recent weeks I have, and I am confident that you have also been exposed to the Public Service Announcements that December 7, 2011 is the last day you can revise your Medicare Plan for the coming year.

I know that the first time I heard this Public Service Announcement I immediately thought of the quote that our President made as he prepared to sign the declaration of war on December 8, 1941.

"A Date Which Will Live in Infamy"

I suspect that our Government could have selected a more appropriate day to cease taking revisions to the Medicare Plan for us older folks. Or is our government attempting to revise our focus on December 7, 1941?

Royalty Row

The 2011 Cherry Blossom Festival Royal Court decided to start a new tradition for the Cherry Blossom Festival.

The reign of the 2011 Royal Court will be complete as they participate in the Crowning of the 2012 Cherry Blossom Festival Royal Court on November 19th.

The 2011 Royal Court determined to leave a legacy of their time by planting a Yoshino Flowering Cherry Tree on the Campus of Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia

The tree was donated by Agape Nursery also located in Macon, Georgia. Here you see Victor who is the operator of this Nursery.

A portion of the Royal Court with the Senior Cherry Blossom Queen. This Court will be Crowning the new Queen and her Court as well as the Senior Queen for the 2012 Festival on Saturday, November 19th.

Neel Reid Homes

Macon, Georgia

Part III

Today I continue my journey around Macon and feature another Post in the Series, Neel Reid Homes of Macon, Georgia.

This home is located at 114 Buford Place just off of Vineville Avenue. It was constructed in 1915 for Albert Bach. It was Neel's Commission # 266

347 College Street. This building is known as Massee Apartments. It was Commission # 534 and constructed in 1924 for W. J. and O. J. Massee.

Please note the Baroque limestone entry and the bull's eye in the roof pediment. The iron torcheres and door grills are from the original construction.

397 College Street. This home was transformed by Neel Reid in 1911. The Commission # was 146. This home was a brick, turreted Victorian Mansion prior to the transformation.

Presidential Campaign Ethics

In view of all the allegations being made about current Presidential Candidates here in the United States of America I was recently contemplating what we would hear if Mother Theresa was alive, a U. S. Citizen and seeking the Nomination to run for President of the United States.

Can you imagine these allegations being reported by the print and electronic media. It has been reported that Mother Theresa who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979:

Walked on the wrong side of the road as she proceeded to her Pre-School!

Once sassed her Mother when told to eat all of her Dinner!

Once looked at a boy in her Pre-School with lust filled eyes!

In her adult life she once asked a Hindu Priest for a Beefburger!

Challenged Muhammad Ali who claimed to be the Greatest!

We would be led to believe that these allegations are indeed true because there are so many of them. Of course with this number of allegations there must certainly be more. Such a person is unfit to seek the Office of President of the United States of Amercia!!

I appreciate that this would never happen in our Country. Mother Theresa has passed on and I believe she is now considered a Saint!!

Second Sunday in the Park

It was a very pleasant Sunday Afternoon in Washington Park, Macon, Georgia. I enjoyed the Karen Bivins and Family Concert very much. They performed music from many genre and everyone appeared to enjoy the Concert.

Urban Renewal

I have recently completed a project that was long overdue. I refinished the front door. The first picture is the before picture.

The Genesis of a Hero

I have just finished reading Tim Tebow’s book entitled “Through My Eyes.” I would like to share my comments about this Hero:

He relates the circumstances of his birth. His parents were told that he should be aborted because of his pre-birth condition.

He related how he and his brothers often played in the mud on the small farm his parents owned. He called this opportunity being made “Farm Tough.”

He traveled with his Dad to the Philippines at the age of fifteen. He related how he shared the Gospel message to the students in the Philippines. He always started his presentation with the fact that he also was born in their country.

During his high school years he discussed a Coach that had three words posted on the Locker Room Wall:

Strength

Honor

He had many role models but he specifically mentioned the 1982 Heisman Winner, Herschel Walker who was a Running Back from Georgia. Another role model was Danny Wuerffel, who earned the Heisman in 1996 while playing at Florida as a Quarterback.

On of his childhood friends, Kevin Albers had a Dad named Gary who trained to be a U. S. Navy Seal. It was Gary that developed an exercise routine for Tim.

While he was at Florida he made hospital visits to encourage patients. Tim related that these visits also did a lot to encourage him.

Prior to the 2007 Heisman Trophy presentation a former recipient, Danny Wuerffel took him into a back room and prayed with him. Tim later wrote that he appreciated that moment because Danny had taken an interest in him when he (Tim) was in high school.

One of many special moments that Tim shared in his book is when a family wrote him a letter to let him know that their son had accepted Christ after watching the Tim Tebow Heisman acceptance speech.

We have all read about Tim’s work in an orphanage in the Philippines, however he points out that all of us are indeed orphans who have been adopted into the family of God.

Tim’s speech in 2008 after the loss to “Ole Miss” is well known. He concluded that speech with two words – “God bless.”

The scripture text for Chapter 18, entitled “A Promise Fulfilled” is John 3:16. This Chapter is devoted to the conclusion of the 2008 Football Season. He related that for the Southeastern Conference Championship (SEC) game he continued to wear the Philippians 4:13 eye black. The Gators put that game away with a 24-14 win. The next game was the National Championship Game that he wore the John 3:16 eye black. I was impressed to read about Tim’s impromptu Bible Study just hours prior to the National Championship Game. After the study he made this statement, which I quote: “Guys, we are going to win the National Championship tonight. And when we do, we are going to give so much honor and glory to Jesus Christ. It is going to be awesome.”

He concluded his College Football Career he stated: “…..I did the best I could, trying to always finish strong.” As I read this I could not help but recall the “Farm Strong” attitude he developed in his younger years.

He then relates his situation concerning being a Denver Bronco. Of special importance to me was his story about speaking at a church in Memphis, TN on Mother’s Day. After sharing his story a young woman waited to talk to him. She is quoted here: “I have an abortion scheduled for tomorrow morning at 9 A.M.,” she cried, “and now I will not go through with it.”

As I read this book over the period of about six hours on two days I was impressed with how Tim Tebow shared his story and also his Faith. How he worked to achieve his fame. How His Family and Faith worked to make him the person he now is.

Tim dedicated this book: "To all those who have been told that they couldn't achieve their dreams...."

I would humbly suggest that this book, “Through My Eyes” be required reading by every fourteen or fifteen year old on this Earth. It is a powerful book, which relates an impressive story of how success can be achieved.

I recently enjoyed the opportunity to attend the Heroes and Legends Concert performed by the Macon Symphony Orchestra.

"New/Proposed Medical Guidelines"

Recently we all read or heard of new guidelines for the use of the"PSA" also known as "prostate specific antigen" blood test for males to detect the onset of prostate cancer in males. If I recall correctly it was determined that there is really no need for this test.

A few days later I was in a discussion with a fellow citizen about this announcement. It was stated that this was probably established as a new/proposed guideline to reduce medical test expenses now that our "New Health Care System" will soon be coming on line.

More recently I also heard that the recommendation for the first baseline evaluation mammogram for breast cancer detection be established as age 50 versus the previously published age of 40. You can quickly view for your self the many websites that are discussing this matter with a quick internet search using the topic: "mammogram guidelines."

Therefore there is much confusion for the citizens as well as the health care professionals in the United States. Are these new guidelines/proposals being generated to reduce future health care cost? Are these new guidelines/proposals founded on accurate research? Of course I could post many questions/concerns about these new developments.

Then, on Friday, November 11, 2011 I was reading my local print media "The Telegraph" distributed in Macon, Georgia. A certain radiation oncologist published an article entitled "Prostate cancer is literally killing Georgia's men."

The article cited the drafted recommendation from the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) concerning the PSA test. He concluded his article with this sentence, which I quote regarding why should a young 40 year old male die from this disease of prostate cancer if a timely PSA test can not be funded: "How would your proposed recommendations help this young man delay death from his cancer?"

I post this entry today to simply point out that there are those who are concerned about proper medical care while it also appears that there are those who have no medical expertise in Urological/Oncological matters are now proposing new "Federal Guidelines."

It this the future of our Medical Care in the United States of America? I sincerely hope that the good folks at the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) become aware in a most timely manner that their recommendations/proposals may indeed have dangerous consquences. If money is there motivation I am confident that early detection is far less expensive than acute care anyday.

"I Fry Mine In Lard"

I enjoyed the opportunity to attend a fine music concert yesterday, Sunday, November 13, 2011. During the course of the performance I had a "flash back" to my days as a performer in the Garnavillo High School's annual performance of George Frideric Handel's "Messiah." More about the cause of my flash back later.

I was a Freshman in the Mixed Chorus of over 100 voices as we practiced the Messiah in 1953. Our instructor, the voice/music teacher was a graduate of Northwestern University's famed Bienen School of Music. Her mantra was that she could teach anyone to sing. A few days prior to our performance on a Sunday afternoon in the High School Gym she took the time to tell us about audience conduct during the performance of the Messiah. She told us this story from her time as a Chorus member:

Her group was performing "The Messiah" and I suspect it was at a Chicago location because of the location of Northwestern. Two "matrons" were seated in the front row and really not paying much attention to the concert. In fact they were discussing a matter that later proved to be most amusing. During the performance of "The Hallejuah Chorus" where the singers pause a brief moment before the final "Hallejuah" the entire venue was able to hear the comment: "I Fry Mine In Lard."

Our Chorus Director/also the Voice Teacher told us this story so that we would share it with our family and friends prior to the performance so that no one would make this error at our Performance.

Needless to say, we all heard this story every year, always a few days prior to the performance because each year there were always new Chorus members - the Freshmen. Additionally there were always new families attending the performance. Please be aware that this High School was located in a town of 700 citizens and the High School was attended by over 120 Scholars. If I recall correctly, there was always over 100 singers in the Mixed Chorus. In fact, I have fond memories of singing the "First Tenor" Solos my Senior Year of High School.

Now, for the balance of the story and the reason I had the "flash back" yesterday afternoon at a very nice concert venue right here in Macon, Georgia.

There was this individual seated to my left who waited until the performance started to unzip her handbag to acquire a cough drop. Then zip it back shut. Then the unwrapping of the cough drop. I would suspect that she had not lubricated the zipper so it generated a fair amount of disturbance. A few minutes later the coughing commenced. Then the concert attendee seated in front of the loud zipper owner also had to have a coughing spell. Needless to say this all generated the need for a new quest for another cough drop. Thus a repeat of the zipper noise to open the handbag as well as close it again as the next cough drop was acquired.

I thought to myself, why was not this whole procedure anticipated prior to the commence of the performance? It would have been much more civil of the lady concerned to have planned ahead. I can appreciate why no one would want to miss the concert. It was a grand event and we enjoyed it very much, even though the zipper was a distraction.

As I prepared to post this entry I also learned that the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University is regarded as one of the premier music institutions in the United States. When I was in High School as part of the Mixed Chorus I was not aware of the reputation of this School of Music or the background of our Concert Director/Music Teacher. I do recall that she was a happy person; however she could keep all of us boys in line with a simple display of her anger with us when we misbehaved. We all did respect her, not only because of her ability; but for her age. We never knew her age, but we all thought she must have been in her 70s. After we graduated we did learn of her position in the local community and our respect increased.

Thus, when I attend any Concert/Music Event I arrive early enough to get situated, read the program and attend to any personal problems that I anticipate so as not to disturb my fellow concert goers.

I shall never forget "Lucia Roggman." Here is her bio which was printed in my Class of 1958 Yearbook:

"Miss Roggman, who works so hard in the vocal music department, is a graduate of Chicago Musical College, Grinnell College, and received her B.A. and B.M. at Northwestern." Thank You!!!!

Sep 18, 2011 - Matthew 20: 1-16. "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a master......." The message focused on the fact that we should always put others first, and that Jesus absolved us all from our sins. Admittedly life here has many challenges; but Heaven is perfect.

Oct 2, 2011 - Philippians 3: 4-14. "....Christ Jesus has made me his own." "Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it...." I learned that I am not alone, however I also heard that I must stand firm. We were all encouraged to use God's Word in our lives. Focus on God's plan and do not be distracted!!!!

Oct 9, 2011 - Philippians 4: 4-13. "Rejoice in the Lord always....." The message that day gave us a seven point program:

Focus on Jesus
Go into the World and make disciples for Jesus
Be Happy, but project Jesus' Love
Always ask God for Help
Rely on God
Share God's Love
Then Smile

Saint Paul made this statement: "I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content."

Oct 16, 2011 - Ephesians 2: 8-9. "For it is by Grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works....." Sharing our Faith!!! The questions were asked "Are you 100% sure you are going to Heaven?" How would we answer? or "If God asked us 'Why should I let you into Heaven?' how would you answer?"

Our speaker also asked us if we would believe him, if he told us there was a Dinosaur on the Parking Lot. This statement was made to simply remind us that we should not place our faith in the mere words of him; but to place our faith and belief on facts that are presented in God's Word.

We were reminded that only Jesus' death and resurrection makes us perfect. Jesus did the impossible because he was God's Son. We are to acknowledge that eternal life in Heaven is a gift, a free gift from God through his Son, our Savior. We can receive this gift by placing our faith in God's Plan for us. Just as Saint Paul shared his faith with the peoples of Ephesus, we are to share our faith also!!

Oct 23, 2011 - Matthew 22: 34-46. The Pharisees challenged Jesus with this question: "Which is the great commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied, "You shall love the Lord your god with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

Yes,we are to obey God's Laws; but know that God's Good News gives us total forgiveness when we error. When we commit sin/s. Yes we must believe this fact and "Love" God!!

Neel Reid Homes

Macon, Georgia

Part II

On October 28, 2011 I commenced my Neel Reid Homes of Macon, Georgia project. I will feature several of his Homes in each Blog Post. I hope to be able to make a Neel Reid Post at least once a week.

Today I will focus on two homes on Macon's College Street as well as one home on Bond Street.

This home is at 505 College Street. It was commission 145 and constructed for T.D. Tinsley. It was originally constructed as a cottage in 1854. Neel Reid added the second story in 1911. Note the signature fence and gate with is the landmark in the 500 block of College Street.

A close up view of 505 College Street. Several years ago I was fortunate in being a guest for an open house at this address. The front garden of this home is very well done; however the Gardens in the Back are terrific. The Neel Reid additions are known as Commission # 145.

This house was Commission # 82 and was constructed in 1910 for W. P. Coleman. It is located at 596 College Street. The home was situated on the lot so that the front door would look directly down Tinsley Lane. This Federal style home features a ionic-columned portico with side lights at the entry.

This home faces North at 1116 Bond Street and is regarded as being constructed in 1910. It was Commission # 83 for Mrs. Everett Coleman. It features a classic cottage-style garden.

"God Bless America"

Yes, this is an often used phrase by "We The People" and also those seeking election and even re-election. It is a noble phrase and I use the sentence often in my Post here and in my engagement during many discussions with my fellow peoplekind.

I use this picture here because it certainly reflects my love of America and our great symbol, Our Flag.

Now, just in case you are reading this blog which I have published over the period of several years and do not know who I am, this picture will quickly let you know that I have a considerable investment in the United States of America. This picture was taken in 1963 when I was a proud Sailor assigned to an Attack Aircraft Carrier named USS Ranger (CVA-61). The Ranger was a Carrier assigned to the United States Pacific Fleet. Her period of service spanned over 30 years.

As you may suspect I remain involved in the events in my Country. I will quickly add, that for most of my readers here, your Country, also.

I recently experienced the opportunity to hear a Doctor who is in practice within 100 miles of Macon, Georgia discuss "Obamacare."

It was a very interesting presentation and the discussion focused on the "Commerce Clause" of our U. S. Constitution. I also learned about the "wheat wars of 1941" which also involved the Commerce Clause. The current "Obamacare" legislation will soon be considered by the U. S. Supreme Court. The speaker spoke openly about the fact that the Commerce clause is now being abused.

We were also informed that "Obamacare" is all about control. The basic motivation for this Obamacare is:

A Lure for all from all over!

Illegals and legals are covered!

A vote buying scheme!

During the presentation, which was brief our current President was quoted as saying:

"I have considered going it alone!" when he received opposition from various Lawmakers from our duly elected U. S. Congress.

The speaker then addressed the fact that our Medical Care System is currently mired down with much fraud. He cited the "baby's first picture" scam where the hospital of his employment expends between $2,500 to $3,500 to generate an image of the baby in the womb. This usually happens in the middle of the night when the pregant person presents herself at the ER after an expensive Ambulance Ride also funded by the Taxpayers with the compliant that "the water broke."

As the ultrasound technican concludes the procedure the "pregant person" request a copy of the image. Certainly an expensive method which is employed to get that first coveted picture of the yet unborn.

This, we were informed is but one of many scams that generate great expense to the Medical Care Facilities in our United States of America.

The speaker concluded his presentation with these words:

"If we could eliminate fraud we would not have our current financial problems."

"For Whom the Bell Tolls"

Some here may have read my Blog Post entitled "Wreaths Across America" which I posted a few days ago.

Within hours of posting this entry I received an E-Mail from a peer that discussed the Blog and the contents. The purpose of my Blog Post was to encourage readers to participate in the 2011 "Wreaths Across America" be making an appropriate donation to honor our Nation's Past Heroes at various National Cemeteries.

After I read my peer's comments I considered posting his comments. I also requested his permission, which was granted. During my preparation to do so I thought "What Should I Title" this post. I quickly thought of the title and conducted appropriate research. I suspected that it was a great novel and I quickly ascertained that it was written by Ernest Hemingway in 1939 and published in 1940.

I found a brief summary of this book and quote it here:

"This novel is told primarily through the thoughts and experiences of Robert Jordan, a character inspired by Hemingway's own experiences in the Spanish Civil War, as a reporter for the North American Newspaper Alliance. Robert Jordan is an American who travels to Spain to oppose the fascist forces of Francisco Franco"

I now take the opportunity to quote my peers comments regarding my post about "Wreaths Across America."

"I totally agree with the concept and will contribute but that was not the first think that I thought of when I received your post this a.m. What I thought of was funeral wreaths strung on every door of this once great nation. America is dying, she may even be dead! And this chills my heart to the bone. We have a self-appointed, as they are truly not elected, any longer government of princes,/ Princesses', kings' and queens' most of whom don't give a damn about anyone's rights but their own. Over the past 20 years I've watched as the Bill of Rights has progressively been eaten away at the fringes. Very soon now the meat of our rights will be at stake. The manner in which the "Occupy" groups are bein ghandled are the mere tip of the ice berg. It starts with the right to protest what are truly grave injustices and ends by the loss of free speech being couched in terms of politically correct behavior. I'm not so young as to have forgotten the vivil atrocities and mindset that occurred and were required under Brezhnev and his formidable lackey's. The Marxist mentality, though utopian in its sounds, smells of bull manure now just as it did then...nothing has changed but the countries at the table!! So the first question I'd like to ask our great men and women in harm's way right now is "what are you fighting for as the enemy is now within?" I'd like to ask them to come home as there are more important things to do here. But these are simply the ramblings of a very well travelled constitutionalist and of one who does truly love AMERICA not the current country, the once awesome country but the continued idea!"

I will conclude this post entitled "For Whom the Bell Tolls" with this reminder from an earlier post today. "We Are At War!!!" It will take the engagement of "All Hands" to win this Battle. Are you ready?

"Vulnerable"

I was recently afforded the opportunity to hear a well regarded speaker discuss the "Vulnerabilities" that confront our very way of life here in the United States of America.

The speaker commenced his discussion with a brief story of how the "Lessons of Our Lives" are often sometimes hard to learn or even appreciate at the time these situations happen.

He then went on to discuss the events of September 11, 2001 and how we in the United States are still "vulnerable" today. Additionally he informed us that eternal vigilance is required to keep America Safe.

I learned that the planning for 9-11 took a total of five years. Our enemy, focused on how our Country reacted to Airplane Hi-jackings over the span of the past 30 some years and employed tactics to con the passengers on the first two planes that hit the Twin Towers in New York City.

Because of "cell phone technology" the passengers on the plane that eventually crashed in Pennsylvania knew what was going to happen to them. Thus they stormed the cockpit to avoid the unknown target of their Hi-jackers. These Heroes saved the "potential target" from great harm and possibly the loss of many, many more lives.

The "con" the enemy employed was the fact that in the past our Airliners and Government usually gave in to the Hi-jackers. The Hi-jackers on 9-11 were counting on the same reaction to execute their missions. They were successful in executing three of the four missions.

The speaker then discussed that our Country is still "vulnerable" today. Do we know what our enemy/s have planned or are even planning as I compose this Blog Post today?

When the word "vulnerable" is used as an adjective is means: "Exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed." I would have to agree with the speaker at this event. We are still vulnerable today, in spite of what we as a Country have accomplished as regards security measures. I would submit that we all, our elected and even appointed leaders need to commence thinking like a potential enemy. Where are our weak areas? What have we overlooked?

As a Society we have accepted the human mantra of "Our Fellow Peoplekind Are Decent And Respect Our Way Of Life!" This may be how we conducted our foreign affairs in the past, but I would remind you of the terrible attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Our Government had incorrectly assumed that "Japan could not attack our base so far away from their homeland."

We now know better. What are we currently doing to insure our current and future safety? First of all, we as citizens and our duly elected leaders as well as our appointed leaders must acknowledge and admit that "Yes We Are At War!!!"

Once we accept that germane fact we can proceed with appropriate funding and actions to prevent an attack or at least decrease our vulnerability to such an attack. Will it be easy? Of course not, but I would humbly suggest that rather than focus on the feel good programs that now appear to be the focus of our Federal Government we need to reassess our National Priorities and plan to protect American Interest both here in the United States and Abroad.

When I state the "feel good programs" I am specifically addressing the plethora of programs that our Government has in place to buy the votes of "We The People!"

As we engage in our daily living I think that it is important that we always remember September 11, 2001. We are vulnerable today. We may not desire to acknowledge that fact or we may not want to conduct appropriate planning for our future security however as the speaker at this event informed us: "We are as vulnerable today as we were on 9-11 because of our current policies!!!" This my dear fellow American Citizens is a fact of life.

In summary, I would suggest that "We The People" need to wake up before it is too late. Additionally we must all work to educated our duly elected leaders that yes, "We Are At War!!"

Ready for Autumn

This is the view from the front door of my home in West Bibb County Georgia. Autumn is finally here. I appreciate the cool evenings and the warm afternoons. It is a most pleasant time of the year.

I would urge everyone to take the time to enjoy the Fall Foliage during their daily activities. Beauty abounds everywhere, we just have to be alert to see it.

This is a picture of the intersection of the two streets that are closest to the marker which is embedded in the Brick Pathway on the Northeast corner of Washington Park in Macon, Georgia.

For several weeks I have been keeping articles that have captured my interest:

Sep 25, 2011 - "Prison of the Mind" by Charles E. Richardson. In this column the author pointed out that the former mantra employed by some is "That it was still their way or the highway" as he discussed the "changing political winds under the Gold Dome....." I believe that he was referring to the new focus of our current "Bibb Delegation" to the Georgia General Assembly. We were encouraged to not let our minds become a prison focused on the past.

Sep 26, 2011 - A "Your Say" column by George A. Fadil Muhammaad was focused on the recent Democrat primary that elected candidate Robert Reichert. The article was entitled "Now that he's won, the Mayor must address the total comunity's needs." The author focused on the fact that the Mayor needs to focus on many situations in the City of Macon. Yet, I continue to be amazed that the City Council of Macon has neglected to implement the Mayor's Plan, which was formulated by the Police Department. I would submit that if the Mayor's Plan is inferior, I would humbly suggest that maybe the "City Council" could develop a superior scheme to address the Youth Violence issue that has troubled Macon in recent weeks.

Sep 28, 2011 - "A new day is dawning" by Dr. Catherine Meeks. From my point of view she correctly summed up the situation here in Macon/Bibb County as she stated"we have to change." Her concluding sentence stated "Let's begin with collective cooperation and work together for the sake of all the children and our collective futures."

Oct 5, 2011 - Page 1A of "The Telegraph" a subheadline - "County hangs $7550 assessment on man's johnboat." Admittedly I may have missed the article informing us all how this "crisis" was resolved; but I would submit that this was really a non-story that should have been resolved quickly if certain officials had used common sense.

Oct 5, 2011 - "On this matter, let's take the tea party at its word" by Leonard Pitts Jr. The author discussed the challenges our Country faces. I am aware that in order to bring about change two extremes must meet in the middle. I would suggest that the "tea party" realizes that changes must be accomplished; however everybody must practice the gentle of negotiation so that an appropriate compromise can be achieved for the best interest of our Society.

Oct 16, 2011 - "Profile in courage" by Charles E. Richardson. In this article the author presented a situation which happened in April of 1967. I was not aware of this incident; but I am also confident that many local citizens learned of a Lester Maddox of ax handle fame that did enact much needed prison reform in Georgia. While I did not reside in Georgia in 1967 I was aware of an ax wielding Lester Maddox during this time period.

Oct 16, 2011 - "The aimless occupiers" by Kenny Burgamy. In this article the author reminded us that the occupiers may be serving a useful purpose. The occupiers may be allowing the voters of this country to vote for appropriate change in 2012.

Oct 26, 2011 - "Fixing schools depends largely on their leaders" - A special article by Charles H. Roberts. The author submitted three challenges; however I will focus on the third challenge, which I will quote:

"The third challenge is to ensure that all students are engaged in meaningful and rewarding co-curricular and extracurricular activities. A strong effort should certainly be made to strengthen and increase participation in existing activities, such as ports teams and marching bands, emphasizing discipline and excellence in all aspects. School leaders should then implement intramural activities during the school day, while operating high quality after-school programs. Parents and members of the surrounding communities could become instrumental in this process. Once students are meaningfully engaged in these activities, their dispositions can change dramatically for the better, and their continued participation in these activities could be used as leverage to instill discipline and maintain order, rather than continuing to suspend and expel students to no effect, or with negative effect."

Finally Dr. Roberts suggest that the musical heritage of Macon and Middle Georgia be stressed to properly engage our Scholars and achieve positive education results.

I salute Dr. Roberts for his "Your Say" article and I will simply add my observation. If we continue the same tactics, while expecting different results; we are all indeed insane.

Maybe, as Dr. Meeks pointed out - "It is time for change." Or words with that emphasis. Thank You, Dr. Roberts. Maybe you are on to something!!!

Let us all hope that our leaders are awake!!!

For the past four Sundays Members and Friends have delivered donations of candy, comfort items and health care items to this Table.

Today a Committee of Three packed the three Priority Mail Boxes and completed the required Customs Forms so that they could be mailed to our Heroes who are serving in Harms Way in the Middle East.

Because of the dedication of many we were able to send 21 pounds and eight ounces of "Care Package Items." The value of all three boxes was $235.00.

When we mailed them at the Post Office we were informed that our Heroes should have these boxes in two weeks.

Wreaths Across America

The pictures featured in this Blog Post were taken in 2010 at Andersonville National Cemetery during the Wreaths Across America Event.

Every since 1992 this program has been carried out at Arlington National Cemetery. It was started because a Christmas Wreath Maker had excess inventory so he donated them to Arlington National Cemetery as a way to honor our Nation's Heroes. To learn more about the 2011 program please visit:

I cannot think of a more appropriate way to Honor any Hero of our Nation than to participate in the Wreaths Across America Program.

October 10, 2011 - My Blog post that day was entitled "Validate All" wherein I discussed the need to allow our youth the opportunity to challenge themselves and to be involved in positive activities.

We all know that our Education System is focused on Academics and Sport. I would humbly suggest that there is more to life than Sport Activities. Yes, inspite of the fact that I was involved in youth sports as a coach during the development days of my Sons; they were also allowed to participate in Scouts, 4-H and the Music Programs at their respective schools.

Recently I recalled how I was involved in a positive activity while I was young. I was a member of the "Safety Patrol" at school. This was a position of leadership and also trust. I was selected because I suspect that my Teacher/s saw that I had potential. As I reflect back on this opportunity I can realize that it did help me develop into a person that could be trusted.

I know that during the recent "School Building" phase of our Bibb County School System that everyone was often told that we needed more School Buildings at different locations so that more Scholars would have the opportunity to participate in the various extra activities that more schools would provide.

Yes, we have more Sport Teams and more Music Activities. Yes, there is more opportunity for more Scholars to participate.

Today I would like to suggest that another positive activity that we could have our Middle School Scholars participate in would be "Safety Patrol." This activity is Sponsored in part by the American Automobile Association (AAA).

I understand that it is quite easy to implement and I suspect that it would receive the support of our Local Law Enforcment Agencies, both in the City and the County. Additionally, it would give our Scholars yet another worthwhile activity to promote their own self development. It would give Scholars who may not be interested in Sport or Music an appropriate venue/activity to learn Leadership.

I would suggest that the Teachers at these Middle Schools would also appreciate the opportunity to let their Scholars learn Leadership in a Hands On Manner.

Therefore I am recommending that our Bibb County School Board give serious consideration to the establishment of a "Safety Patrol" Team.

If you do not reside in Bibb County Georgia and care about providing appropriate Leadership Activities for your School's Scholars I would suggest that you contact your Local School Board.

We all know and realize that our Youth like being involved in a "Group." We often hear that this is the reason that some seek out "Gangs" which do not provide wholesome activities for our Youth. Yet "Gangs" continue attract youth who are looking to be accepted.

So, maybe this Safety Patrol idea has merit. I would suggest that it is certainly something that should be considered.

After all, what we are currently allowing/doing in Bibb County appears to be developing potential citizens who are, in some cases, focused on violence. From my point of view this is happening all too often with too many of our Communities Youth.

Neel Reid Homes

I was fortunate to be able to participate in the recent "Driving Tour of Architectural Sites" which focused on the Homes Designed By Neel Reid who is known as an Architect who designed "Georgia Classic" homes.

This tour was conducted in Macon, Georgia and was a fund raiser for the Federated Garden Clubs of Macon, Inc. I have decided that I will feature several of these Homes in a Blog Post today. It is my goal to include more of these Neel Reid Homes in future Blog Post.

This home is located at 1238 Jefferson Terrace and is currently being renovated by a new owner.

It was my good fortune to call in quickly on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 to WMAC - AM 940 Radio and acquire tickets to the Impact Wrestling Taping at the Macon Coliseum. Below please find several pictures that I was able to take. We did not have ringside seating; however I am happy with the photographs that I was able to acquire with my Camera. It was an evening of great fun and entertainment.

The drama of the participants was exciting to observe and to also hear. I say "Thank You" for the free tickets. Thank You AM 940!!!

"Occupy"

Anywhere!!!

We have all read/viewed a lot of commentary/video concerning the current "Occupy" anywhere movement here in the United States of America.

First of all, I am also aware that some of the participants in these "Occupy Events" are actively employed and participate simply because they are concerned and also have the right to do so. That stated I would suggest that the "Occupy" participants who are not employed and are simply mouthing the concept that "Big Business Is Evil, etc........" seek a real job where they are allowed to join a Federal Credit Union. Then they will be eligible to participate in the management of their Financial Institution. These people may not know, but a Credit Union Member is a share holder and thereby allowed to vote on who the "management is."

I submit this post because I have heard that many who participate in the "Occupy" events are unhappy with the "Big Banks" and how these Big Banks ignore the customer. Here is but one way they can escape the system. Of course they could also use a "Local Small Bank" in their location and again, escape the "evils" of the Big Banks.

As I conclude this Post, I suspect that many who are engaged in the Occupy Events are doing so because it is fun and/or interesting to be part of a group.

Finally, please take the time to "Thank A Veteran" this Veterans Day; because it is through their efforts that anyone in the United States of America even has the right to protest and also work to improve civilization.

"A Tale Of Three Houses"

This is the location and the sequence that the three houses will have once the moving infrastructure is removed and the appropriate walls are constructed.

This view allows you to appreciate the wheels and the steel placement under the houses so that they could be moved.

These Truck Tractors are build for slow house moving duty. Note the large wheels/tires. I would hate to have to buy replacement tires for this equipment.

Now we know why the back of the houses was at the other end of the steel beams that hooked up to the Trucks that pulled these houses to the new location. The front porch now faces Oglethorpe Street.

This view allows you to see the cement foundations that were in place prior to the houses being pulled to this location.

A close up of the concrete foundations. Each house is setting above these foundations so that once they are jacked up to remove the moving equipment they can be lowered to the appropriate height so that the walls can be constructed.

An Historic Home

Every reader of this Blog is aware that I have been focused on Macon, Georgia in recent days. While I was out and about capturing images for the College Hill Bear Train I noted this House on Adams Street which runs on the West Side of Tattnall Square Park.

I do not know who owns this house or who lives in this home; but I am publishing this Blog Entry to simply let the readers know that their is real beauty in Macon and especially in the Historic District.

I suspect that most will not know what this stone was used for. I have been led to believe that this is the Carriage Stone that was placed along the curb so that people could step out onto this stone as they departed the carriage.

College Hill Bear Trail

Update

On 20 October 2011 I posted the first two Bears on this Blog. They were located in Washington Park in Macon. At that time I did not know if there were other Bears in Macon. Over the weekend I learned of other Bears. Today I will post images and locations of three more Bears that are also a part of the College Hill Bear Trail.

This Bear is located in Tattnall Park very near the intersection of Adams Street and Coleman Avenue. It is in the Southwest corner of the Park.

This Bear is located almost across the street from Alexander II Magnet School. It is in the Northeast corner of Tattnall Square Park.

Here you can see an upclose image of a Symphony. I appreciate the detail on this Bear. Well Done to the Artist!!

This Music Bear is located at the corner of Forsyth Street at Orange Street. You will also note that there is one mis-spelled work on the plaque for this Bear.

I would appreciate it very much if anyone knows of additional locations for these Bears. Of course I will pay them a visit and post their images and locations here. What a wonderful project to promote Macon, Georgia.

It was my good fortune to attend the Concert presented at the Neva Fickling Music Hall on the Mercer University Campus. I arrived early enough to obtain pictures of the Concert Hall prior to the set up for the Concert. This Music Hall is a real treasure.

I always obtain a center seat about five rows back from the Stage. I appreciate Organ music and I have fond memories of attending several Organ Concerts in this Music Hall.

During the "Warm Up" without the Director present on Stage I snapped this picture of the young performers. I counted a total of 22 music makers. I understand that these musicians come from all over Middle Georgia.

During the performance I noted a String Bass player with an instrument that had two tags on it. At first I thought of Minnie Pearl and how she always had a price tag hanging from her hat during her Nashville Country Music Performances. Then I thought, most likely the Musician had broken the instrument where the tags were located with the cost of the repair on the tags. Of course this was to remind the performer that it cost real money to repair an instrument. During the performance I also noted one proud parent focused on this player with a video recording device. After the Concert I inquired of the proud parent to tell me the story about the tags. I was informed that the tags indicated that the String Bass was a loaner from Bibb County Central High School and that the performer was a Central High School Scholar who played the String Base. Of course this generated a flash back for me when I recalled that one of my Sons also played String Base in the Central High School Orchestra several years ago. I did talk to this performer and I wished him well with his Musical Studies.

The entire Concert was a real joy to listen to and to also view. There were a total of 22 performers and they all displayed great enthusiasm for their craft.

We were also treated to an Oboe Quintet performance, who performed one selection.

Each of these Musicians can be proud of their accomplishments and I look forward to their end of the year performance next Spring.

A Tale Of Three Houses

Macon On The Move

This was the scene early Saturday, October 22, 2011 as crews removed the street signs at Coleman and Adams Street in preparation for the moving of three houses from their original location on Coleman Avenue alongside Interstate 75 near the Campus of Mercer University.

This is the transporter for House Number One as it waited to proceed alongside the Southside of Tattnal Square Park. You can see the Mercer University Campus in the background.

As you can determine, the streetlights had to be laid down to allow the houses to pass by. It took a lot of coordination to have this project completed in two days. Two days to move the houses from their location on Coleman Avenue to their new location on Oglethorpe Street.

This is a view of house number two as the crews prepared to start the move on Montpelier Avenue.

This is a view of house number three. I was told that this was the longest and also the heaviest house to move.

This is a view of house number one as it was parked on Ross Street waiting for Sunday to be moved to it's new location.

House number two coming around a difficult turn from Ash Street onto Ross Street . As you can ascertain it was close quarters.

House number two did make the turn. I can appreciate the coordination that the moving crews displayed as they used hand signals to inform the truck drivers which way to steer.

This is house number three waiting on Ash Street. As mentioned above, this house was the longest and the heaviest. Note the size of the truck used to pull this house.

Another view of the largest house and the largest truck. Again, I will say that I was very impressed with the crews that conducted this move.

Here you see two endloaders. One carrying gravel to fill areas where the curb needed to be sloped and the other with a cable to prevent the house from traveling too fast down a hill.

This is Ash Street looking back toward College Street and the entrance to Mercer University Campus. You can ascertain that the linemen are restoring the power lines after the houses passed by. I was very impressed with all the organizations that worked as a team to allow this move of three houses to be conducted.

"A Taste of Broadway"

Now before anyone thinks that the Flower Child spent the weekend in New York City let me put your mind at ease.

I was fortunate in the fact that I knew several members of the Byron United Methodist Church in Byron, Georgia and they sold me a ticket to this grand event. My Bride and I attended the premier 2011 performance this past Friday evening, October 21, 2011. The musical was presented in the Christian Fellowship Center of the Church.

The cast consisted of sixteen singers and each and everyone of them performe flawlessly. The one hour and fifty minute program consisted of many hit songs of Broadway Musicals and was performed in a Bistro Setting. The intermission featured great snacks which were abundantly shared with all attendees.

I realize that in order to produce such a great show that it takes many, many volunteers and also realize that it takes several practice sessions to present such a great show.

I understand that the proceeds from this Musical go to the Building Fund of the Byron United Methodist Church. It was certainly a great evening of entertainment and toe tapping music. For me the Tap Dancer was the hit of the show.

Special Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST)

I will make my statement at the beginning of this Post. I am a resident of Bibb County, Georgia, United States of America.

Yesterday, October 20, 2011 I participated in the early voting for the 2011 General Election. As a Bibb County Resident I had only two items on my Ballot.

The first one was to vote for or against the SPLOST for all of Bibb County. Approval of this item will add a one penny sales tax to every purchase in Bibb County in order to raise funds for many projects.
The second item on my ballot was the approval of Sunday Sales at all Package Stores in Bibb County.

After I voted I contemplated the potential results if the SPLOST is passed and the Sunday Package Store Sales is approved by a majority of the Voters in Bibb County. We will be able to pay-off debt and construct a plethora of proposed items as well as fund several projects.

If the Sunday Package Store Sales is approved we will also see an increased revenue stream to Bibb County, especially if the Counties surrounding Bibb do not approve Sunday Package Store Sales. I do not even know if the Counties surrounding Bibb are even voting on Sunday Package Store Sales for their respective Counties. The fact that Citizens should vote on this item was left to the appropriate elected officials of each County.

Therefore I am suggesting that Bibb Voters should approve the SPLOST and the Sunday Package Store Sales. Then we can most certainly prosper because if the outlying counties do not approve Sunday Package Store Sales we will see a massive influx of customers traveling to Bibb County to acquire their Package Store Items on any Sunday.

Now to be honest, I was raised in a State where the Package Stores were operated by that State. They were only open six days a week. Of course anyone who desired to consume Package Store items was capable of planning ahead and acquiring their choice of Adult Beverages on Saturday.

However, when I first arrived in Georgia many, many years ago, my Landlord quickly pointed out that if I ever was thirsty for any Adult Beverages on Sunday I could travel down such and such back road and acquire anything I desired.

I submit this Blog Post to simply share my opinions and trust that you will read this post for your personal information as you also decide how you should vote regarding the SPLOST and the Sunday Package Store Sales here in Bibb County Georgia. College Hill Bear Trail

Today, October 20th as I was conducting my errands in Macon I viewed two statues. They are both on the edges of Washington Park. Of course you can ascertain where the first Bear is located. He is looking over College street in the 400 Block. He has been named the Stamp Bear for an obvious reason.

The second bear I observed was located on the South Side of Washington Park on Washington Avenue. He is looking at the Washington Library.

After I captured these images I did not have additional time to seek out other Bears in Macon, Georgia. If any readers here know of additional Bears please let me know so that I can post their images here on "The World This Week."

As but one citizen of the Middle Georgia Community I salute the organizations that have worked side by side to bring these Bears to Macon, Georgia. I hope that there are more Bears planned or even already placed. They certainly contribute to the local scene to allow Macon, Georgia to have additional points of interest for all of us to enjoy.

The Staff at this store gave me helpful suggestions as to items I needed and the appropriate colors. I am very happy that I shopped at this Store.

Everyone at the party was impressed with the decor that I had and I was glad to let them know of the great service that I received at this store.

ORGANIZED

Rhythm

I was most fortunate today because I determined to attend the Music and the Arts at Vineville United Methodist Church here in Macon, Georgia this afternoon.

This concert featured Clive Driskell-Smith performing the Organ and Joseph Gramley as the Percussionist. This production is part of the Annual Music and the Arts at Vineville and it was the second in a series of eleven events which will conclude o June 10, 2012.

This series is also celebrating 20 years of Arts Opportunities in the Macon Community. When I first read about today's performance I was determined to attend. Never had I experienced an organ concert which also featured a percussion performer. I was impressed and glad that I took the opportunity to attend this event.

The program included:

"The Planets," Op32 by Gustav Holst

"Pluto" commissioned by the performers

"Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity" also by Gustav Holst

"Bolero" by Pierre Cocheruau

"The Carnival of the Animals" by Camille Saint-Saens

Now, before you think that the Flower Child is caught up in classical music, may I remind you that his two Sons, while they were in Elementary School, Middle School and High School participated in Orchestra productions, Marching Band and even Concert Band competitions. I also participated in Band when I was in High School. I have always appreciated music and take the opportunity to attend various concerts here in Middle Georgia.

Of course I am looking forward to the balance of the Music and the Arts at Vineville which include Robert McDuffie and The American Boy Choir just to name a few.

The concert today which featured performers Clive Driskill-Smith and Joseph Gramley was a terrific event and certainly showcased the Organ at Vineville as well as the percussion instruments on loan from Stratford Academy here in Macon. There were well over one hundred attendees at this event and I am confident that everyone was very surprised at the Organ/Percussion combination. Lovely Music which certainly uplifted the Spirits of all.

Forgiveness

During a recent Sunday Morning Bible Class there was a discussion of how proper "Forgiveness" is appropriate in our daily lives.

We then focused on Matthew Chapter 6, versus 14 and 15, which I will quote here:

"For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also firgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins."

Thus it is often understood that in order to receive forgiveness of your sins from God it is required that we must forgive the sins of those who sin against us.

As we discussed this topic we investigated Holy Scripture further to learn that our God is a loving God and that he forgives us our sins when we ask him for forgiveness. We cannot perform any actions to receive or warrant this forgiveness from our God.

Therefore we concluded that God forgives us for our sins because He loves us. We cannot ever perform any actions to earn God's great love.

That stated, as followers and believers in God it should be our mission to forgive others who have sinned against us. By doing this we are bearing witness to others of God's Great Love for us. If we do not witness God's great love for us out of gratitude we are simply ignoring His Great Commission contained in Matthew Chapter 28 in the final three verses.

Thus we concluded that it is of great comfort to know that our God, our Savior forgives us because he Loves us and all we have to do is believe in Him and confess our Sins. We do not ever earn any forgiveness because of our actions.

The Flower Child's Morning View

Unless it is cloudly this is the view that I enjoy each morning as I awake here in West Bibb County Georgia. I realize that I am well Blessed and I appreciate what I have accomplished in my life. Fortunately I served in the U. S. Navy during a time of prosperity in this Country and I was always able to sell my homes upon transfer to a new duty station and realize significant gains. I just hope that our Leaders, both appointed and elected are able to allow our economy function in an appropriate manner so that our economy will once again prosper. I also appreciate the fact that many of our Nation's Citizens served in the Military to insure that we could maintain our Freedoms. The very Freedoms that I can now also enjoy. I also hope that these same Freedoms will not be abolished so that my Children, my Grandchildren and even their offspring can enjoy the same prosperity that I have been blessed with. Thus my prayer and concern today as I conclude this post:

"May God Continue To Bless America"

Georgia's Best

Harvest Soups

Last evening, October 11, 2011 I had the opportunity to be on a panel of three judges that evaluated the Georgia's Best Harvest Soups at the 2011 Georgia National Fair.

Each of us evaluated each entry independent of the others. We assigned point values to each entry in accordance with this scheme:

Taste appeal (flavor) - 30 points

Appearance - 25 points

Texture (consistency) - 20 points

Convenience (simple steps and easy to find ingredients) - 15 points

Creativity (inventive use of ingredients) - 10 points

In as much as the title of this contest was "Georgia's Best Harvest Soups" also looked for the use of Georgia Products. It was a fun contest to evaluate. The First Prize Winner received a Rosette and $100.00. The Second Prize Winner received a Rosette and $75.00 while the Third Prize Winner received a Rosette and $50.00.

Certainly a worthwhile contest to enter. I look forward to being invited to Judge this Competition again in 2012.

October 11, 2010

I will never forget this day, October 11, 2010. That is the day that My Bride fell and broke both bones in her right leg just above the ankle. The above image is an X-Ray showing the plates and the pins which were installed to allow her to walk again.

Thank You to the Doctor and to our Creator, God. As the Doctor stated after the Operation, He could repair the damage, but God would Heal it.

I have heard that our sitting President and certain elected leaders of our Government are supporting the Occupy Wall Street Group/s. I cannot comprehend how any President can support Civil Disobedience.

So My question today is: Where Did 'We The People" Go Wrong? Certainly something to think about and consider.

The Debate

"Reducing the Cost of Military Retirement"

versus

"Protecting Our Nation and Our Interest"

As you can quickly ascertain, I am a U. S. Navy Veteran and I am retired and have been receiving the Military Retirement Benefits that I earned during my 21 years of service.

This image of Sailor Alan (a.k.a. Flower Child" was taken in 1963 during my service in USS Ranger (CVA-61). A CVA is an Attack Aircraft Carrier. I served in this great ship as a Yeoman Striker in the Operations Department office. The Operations Officer was a survivor of the Bataan Death March, so I was afforded the opportunity to learn an abundance of World War II history. For that I am grateful.

This photo was taken in 1976 as I was serving in the USS John Paul Jones (DDG-32). This great warship was a Guided Missile Destroyer and was homeported in Long Beach, California for a routine overhaul. I am shown here outside of U. S. Navy housing in San Pedro, California

Now that you have viewed my version of a disclaimer, I am a Veteran and I have displayed the pictures to prove same, I desire to make the following statements.

I am concerned about the current debate in Washington D.C. regarding the future Military Retirement Benefits. Some say "pensions." I think that they are benefits.

When signing up for Military Service in this the age of the 'All Volunteer Force,' a young male or female signs a blank check indicating that they are agreeing to give their life for our Country. Yet, we the people are allowing the highest levels of our government to display contempt for these Heroes who serve a career in defense of our very way of life.

Yet, even our President lauds these Heroes when it is time to present "The Congressional Medal of Honor." For those who may not know, This Medal is the highest medal that our Heroes can receive. It is earned, not awarded.

So my concern today is: "How can our High Level Officials and also our Duly Elected Leaders even consider any reduction in the Military Benefits for our Veterans?" They have served their County well and now our Leaders/Officials are also considering balancing the U. S. Budget on the Backs of these Heroes.

If you can not appreciate this post, please take the time to visit a Military Cemetery. I would suggest that those in Washington D.C. take a few hours of their precious time to visit Arlington National Cemetery. All others can look up Arlington National Cemetery on the Internet, or even more appropriate places like Andersonville in Georgia or any other Cemetery that contains the remains of our Nations Heroes.

Let us not allow our Elected Leaders and the Various Appointed Citizens take this opportunity to balance the U. S. Budget on the backs of our Nation's Heroes.

Validate All

We often hear many proposals on how to cure the ills of our Society. These proposals are usually more frequent after shootings, killings and other violent crimes are committed.

Yes, this is a trait of the human race. Just as we all pray to be spared right after we hear a tornado warning alert.

I would suggest that we all commit to improving our Society each and every day; not just after a series of violent events.

As I reflect on my youth and the development of the citizens that I and my peer group enjoyed I would like to share a few ideas that apparently worked then; and could also be employed now as we all strive to solve the problems of our current society.

I attended a school where Scholars were allowed the opportunity to explore an interest. I could write all the Countries of the World and spell them correctly when I was in the Fourth Grade. (The map of the world was always pulled down so I focused on the countries of the world when I was not involved in other scholarly activities).
When I was twelve years old I joined 4-H. My Brother, who was ten and I had "Baby Beef" projects our first year in 4-H. I had a steer which I named "Ike" and my Brother named his heifer "Mamie." Neither of us won a blue ribbon at the Clayton County Fair; but we did learn a lot about being responsible. In addition to daily feeding and watering, we had to halter break our "Baby Beef" projects so that we could "show" them at the County Fair. When we joined about three dozen other skinny farm kids in the show ring for the "Baby Beef" judging we wore our white trousers and white shirts. You can be sure that prior to putting on our "show" clothes that we had groomed our "Baby Beef" projects. They were shampooed, curried and even had their hooves polished. I do not recall my weight at that time, but I suspect that it was not more than 105 pounds and yet I was leading a 750 pound baby beef around the show ring on show day. Every one of us was proud of our accomplishments and My Brother and I were especially happy and proud of what we had accomplished during our first year in 4-H. We both, as well as our other four Siblings participated in 4-H throughout our young lives until we each graduated from High School.
During my High School years I was involved in Mixed Chorus, Boys Glee Club and Band. I state this fact to relate that the High School I attended had only 126 Scholars and there were 110 in Mixed Chorus and 60 in the Band. Because I was a farm kid; like most of my peers; but from a large family with limited cash resources I rode the bus home each day to be a farm worker. I was not involved in sport such as Baseball, Basketball or Track. I state this here to relate that each Scholar at this High School had the opportunity to participate in activities in addition to Classroom work. We all had the opportunity and indeed were involved in wholesome activities in addition to the Scholarship activities we all also participated in each School Day.
I was able to enlist in the U. S. Navy; which I did to avoid the Draft into the U. S. Army. I had had enough of walking on gravel roads as a farm kid. Besides that I wanted to view the World. I served for 21 years and had many opportunities to interact with peoples of all cultures in the World as I traveled and also served my Country. I might add that I was 132 pounds when I enlisted. If I had been four pounds less I could not have enlisted. I stated this fact to simply point out that there was no obesity problem in the Society I was raised in. My Boot Camp company consisted of 79 kids from Iowa and one from Alaska. We accepted him and he was our "Boot Camp Petty Officer for Scholarship."

These brief reflections on my development opportunities are shared today to point out that I was not raised in a wealthy family; yet I was afforded many opportunities to have my young life validated. The events of my youth did not require vast sums of money and I grew up to appreciate challenges and the rewards of dedication to the task at hand.

Today, we in Bibb County Georgia have great infrastructure for the schooling/education of our scholars. We have all participated in the funding of these many buildings and the lovely looking Campus environments.

Yet we are not allowing our Scholars the opportunities to be validated citizens such as I was allowed to do!!! What a tragic and indeed a senseless loss!!

So, you may be asking, "What are we doing incorrectly?' I would suggest that our current system of education/child development suffers because we do not allow our Scholars to have fun during the learning process.

We stifle the development of imagination.
We fail to challenge our Scholars.
We do not all Scholars to digress from the "established standards" to that they can explore their interest. Yes, we have AP courses in High School; however the normal Elementary Education process must adhere to a posted outside each classroom door "established standards" list. I have even heard where children in the much lower grades have to be evaluated on how well they perform body elimination functions when they are at school. If this is true, what have the parent/s accomplished in the first few years of their Scholar's life/lives? (Please refer back to my self-imposed "World Map Activities" that I enjoyed in the Fourth Grade).
Most critical is the fact that we do not accept the fact that a child learns more in the first three years of life than they do during the balance of their time on Planet Earth.

The fact that very early childhood education is critical is stated here to place major emphasis on the fact that Parent/s are the "Most" responsible members of our Society to insure that we develop appropriate citizens for tomorrow.

I also realize that this may be difficult to achieve when we have so many children having children; but please be aware that one of my Grandmothers was married at the age of sixteen!! But she was also a responsible Farmer's wife who raised four children, including My Mother.

Yes, I was validated as a young child. Yes I was well blessed with five younger Siblings. Yes, I learned teamwork as a young farm kid. Yes, I enjoyed the opportunity to be raised in a two parent home. Yes I was born in another era. Yes, it was post the Great Depression!!

Yet, I submit today that in spite of all the technology advances of the past sixty years that we as a Society are short changing our future.

So I ask - Are we stifling the development of our next generations by not allowing them and also future young peoples the opportunity to be validated.

Thirty-Nine Years Ago

Tallulah Falls, Georgia

This is a photograph of the four lane Tallulah Falls Georgia Bridge near the Dam. 39 years ago this was a two lane bridge where we stopped because traffic ahead of us had stopped. I looked up just in time to see an 18 wheeler trying to stop. Unfortunately the truck stopped with the bumper even with the back window of our Mercury Montego. Fortunately we were not injured; however our Montego was a total loss. We had to hitch hike home from our Honey Moon.

This is a current view of the dam which is just South of the Bridge shown above. Because of the new bridge much of the local scene has changed; however we appreciated the opportunity to revisit the area of the 1972 accident. Both of these pictures were taken on October 7th as when we took the opportunity to "retrace our 1972 Honey Moon trip."

Surprise Birthday Party

Yesterday, October 9th I honored My Bride with a Surprise 60th Birthday Party. I had the help of three couples to assist me with the Surprise. One couple insured that she would be gone all day Saturday so that I could bake the six cakes. Another couple, our neighbors stored the cakes overnight and finally, our Son, His Bride and our Grandchildren took My Bride to McDonalds for a Happy Meal so that I could set up the House for the Party.

In addition to Pink Lemonade the guest had a selection of six cakes to celebrate with Janice Marie on her 60th Birthday Party.

After the party we settled down to view the Falcons play the Packers. During the course of the game I took several images of our Night Blooming Cereus. I suspect that this will be the last cycle of bloom for 2011. This lovely flower displays it's beauty for one night only and emits a lovely fragrance. A perfect way to conclude a wonderful party day. Unfortunately the Falcons lost their game!!!!

History Lessons

As we made the journey home on October 7th, 2011 we decided to visit the Currahee Military Museum in Toccoa, Georgia. For those who may not know the Toccoa Georgia area was the site of Training for the Heroes who participated in the "D" Day Landings during World War II.

There is a Military Museum in Toccoa which focuses on the Mount Currahee Training of these heroes.

Once these Heroes arrived in England for additional training and waiting for the "D" Day Landings, some lived in horse stables. Inside the Museum at Toccoa there is a restored Stable that was used during World War II.

Of course this is a bunk room that was used by these Heroes. You may know these Men if you viewed the blockbuster Made for Television Classic "Band of Brothers" that was shown on HBO several years ago. I appreciated the opportunity to visit the Museum and to also simply touch a part of their barracks that they lived in as they prepared for "D" Day.

This is the scene as one enters and also departs the Museum at Toccoa. It reflects on the United States and British partnership that allowed the Allies to Win World War II.

"Currahee" or "We Stand Alone" certainly reflects well on the Heroes of the 506th Airborne Infranty Regiment. This "Band of Brothers" is just one small portion of the Military History that is part of the Georgia Heritage.

I am happy that we took the time to visit this Museum. It was education, emotional and certainly very appropriate that we take the time to learn more about our Nation's History!!!!

In addition to the focus on the "Band of Brothers" this museum also included displays from every War that our Nation has been involved in from the Revolution to the current Wars we are involved in as we strive to protect the "Freedoms" of all peoples.

After our visit to the Museum in Toccoa we traveled West on Currahee Street about five miles to this sign. It is at the base of the Mountain.

The Anniversary Celebration

7 October 1972

Yes, thirty-nine years of Marriage. The Flower Child and His Bride decided to celebrate by traveling back in time and retrace the trip we enjoyed after our Wedding in October of 1972.

Although we did not stop at this location during our Honeymoon trip, we did enjoy the Fall Scenes as we traveled to Gatlinburg, TN.

Besides that, we were more focused on other things than eating way back in 1972. I would suggest that those who read this Blog add a comment as to the location where this picture was taken in 2011. By The Way: We did have an enjoyable day!!!!

Government under the Law/Constitution

Government by a Ruler

For the majority of my life here in the United States of America I was informed that our Government and all Citizens lived and conducted government in accordance with the Constitution and the Laws that were enacted by the various levels of Government that we have.

In the recent years I have heard of how our Lawmakers and yes, even our President appear to be ignoring the Laws of the Land which have been enacted since our Country was Founded. I also understand that our Lawmakers and even our President often decide that they know what is best and even ignore our U. S. Constitution.

I also understand that our U. S. Supreme Court has or will consider the fact that our recently enacted "Health Care Law/s" are even allowed by our Constitution. I recall that the Speaker of the House of Representatives informed the Congress that in order to learn what the Health Care Law/s contained it should be passed and then the entire document could be opened and studied. If I understand it correctly the Health Care Law/s contains over two thousand pages.

I also understand that many consider the Health Care Law/s as not meeting the requirements of our U. S. Constitution. I simply cannot comprehend how our esteemed Lawmakers of either Political Party, Democrat or Republican can even think that the Citizens of this great country will tolerate such folly in the Halls of our Congress. I have heard the phrase that our U. S. Capitol, where our Senators and our Representatives meet is "The Peoples House." It is indeed a shame and quite possibly a sham, that the people - "The We The People" often referred to in our important, founding documents are at this time being ignored.

I have even heard that some of my fellow citizens think and/or feel that our Lawmakers and again, Our President think that they "Rule" our Country. If I recall my U. S. History from the third grade correctly, our Citizens celebrated the "Boston Tea Party" to prove to the British Authorities that we are not going to be unjustly taxed by a "Ruler."

In fact our great Country was established with the concept of "Freedom For All Citizens" as one of the mantras that has allowed us to become the Great Nation that we are. I know that Peoples from all over the World covet what we have. We all know that Peoples from all over the World are lined up to come to America. In fact we have people who choose to ignore the normal process to live in our America that they sneek in.

I would suggest that the readers of this Post here today, reflect on what we have achieved and what our future holds for us if we continue to let our duly elected "Leaders" rule us.

If I remember and recall correctly, Dr. Martin L. King expoused "Freedom" in a great number of his speeches. I often hear the phrase "That Freedom Is Not Free." It has been won by the efforts of thousands of our Nation's Heroes who have defended the principles of Freedom in the many conflicts that our Warriors/Heroes have participated in.

I am not at this time willing to let their service and sacrifice be ignored. We must honor these Heroes by demanding that our Leaders lead within the guidelines of our U. S. Constitution and the Laws that have been enacted since our Constitution was adopted/approved by "We The People."

We The People deserve a representative Government as outlined in our U. S. Constitution. After all we Declared Independence from King George well over two hundred and thirty-five years ago.

It is my prayer today that: "May God Continue To Bless America."

I was given this task because I, the Flower Child as a member of a Garden Club here in Macon, Georgia. I proceeded to the assigned area and selected four yards/gardens to turn in. I enjoyed the challenge and look forward to the presentation of the "Sign" denoting the Yard of the Month for September 2011.

A Birthday Gift

For A Wonderful Son

As we prepared for the conclusion of our delightful holiday to the Great Upper Midwest I convinced our Son that it would be appropriate to visit the brewery. After all we were in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Yes, we did the visit. After touring the facility for about 90 minutes we were escorted to the Hospitality Suite. We all had the opportunity to enjoy appropriate Budweiser Products. It was also interesting to learn that the various brews do have a certain serving temperature. You can be sure that what we consumed was the proper temperature.

I was impressed with the factory and even more impressive was the landscaping and gardens between the various buildings of the Budweiser Complex. The Anheuser-Busch, Inc. Property in Saint Louis is impressive. After we enjoyed our choice of beverages we departed through the Retail Sales Area. That was the only way to exit the Brewery. In as much as I had not purchased an appropriate gift for our Youngest Son, I asked him if he would like one of the replica Beer Cases that were on sale. Of course he indicated yes, so I took the opportunity to acquire one on the spot.

Here is our Son modeling his Replica Beer Case. He is active in the local Patriot Guard Riders in the Saint Louis, Missouri area and is a genuine, caring citizen of his community in South Saint Louis. So, Son, you took us on the Brewery Tour and I had the opportunity to acquire a gift for you. Happy Birthday, Son!!!!

2011 Georgia National Fair

Photography Contest

The Judging for the Beginners Entries for the 2011 Photography Contest was completed on Saturday, October 1, 2011. There were 987 Beginner Entries. The three images above show the judges receiving their "Momento Plate" and their Fair Passes.

This is the display you will view when you enter the Miller-Murphy-Howard Building at the Georgia National Fair Grounds. The information poster lets all Fair Attendees know that there are 1770 Photographs on Display for the 2011 Fair. In 2010 there were 1558 Photographs, therefore we had an increase of 212 entries in 2011.

The Georgia National Fair Photography Contest has never had this many entries in the previous 21 years. I would urge everyone who attends the Fair to also visit the Miller-Murphy-Howard Building to see the Photographs and the abundance of other exhibits by Residents of Georgia. I am always impressed and value the educational value of the 4-H Displays as well as the many other Youth Displays. The Fine Art, the Youth Art and the Antiques round out what I enjoy the most in this building.

See You at the 22nd Georgia National Fair which runs from October 7th through October 16th.

During the Month of July we took our Grandchildren to the GoFish Education Center in Perry, Georgia.

Before you travel to Perry to visit this fun, yet very educational Center I would recommend that you visit the WebSite to ascertain the days/hours that they are open. There is not much to write about because in this situation I certainly believe that one picture is worth a 1000 words. Thus this Entry is over 6000 words long.

As You can ascertain, both of these Children enjoyed the visit!!!!

Honoring Our Nations

Heroes

Several years ago, The Federated Garden Clubs of Macon, Inc. dedicated this Blue Star Memorial Marker at the Rest Stop on I-75 Southbound on Veterans Day. The Blue Star Memorial Marker program is a project of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. The Blue Star Program was first established in 1945 in the State of New Jersey.

The Blue Star Memorial Marker Program honors all Veterans "Who Have Served," "Who Are Serving," and those who "Will Serve our Nation in the Future."

The above picture was captured at 8:36 A.M. on September 28th, 2011. The Pine Ridge Garden Club in Macon, Georgia determined that the landscaping for this Memorial Marker needed to be appropriately upgraded. Therefore the Garden Club agreed to expend $135.00 at their September Meeting. By the time all of the required items were purchased a total of $162.00 was expended for this project.

The Landscaping Project took three Purple Muhly Grass plants and three Gold Mop Cypress plants. Two rolls of edging and three bags of garden soil and seven bags of large pine bark nuggets.

As a member of the Pine Ridge Garden Club, I volunteered my time to conduct this landscaping project. As indicated above, I commenced at 8:36 A.M. and the final picture was taken at 11:34 A.M.

The Hostesses at the Macon Welcome Center even saw to it that I had Coffee to consume as I worked on this project. One of them even took this picture of the completed landscaping.

Any landscaping project worth performing must also have a bit of "bling." Here I am modeling my Stainless Steel Shovel with a close up of the six plants. The light on the right side of the circle illuminates the U. S. Flag which is at the top of the pole.

I enjoyed performing this project and would remind My Readers here that Veterans Day 2011 will soon be here. I completed this landscape scheme so that this "Blue Star Memorial Marker" will always look good for the thousands of travelers who pass through this Rest Area each day. Additionally, the planting should remain colorful and vibrant for years to come as we all pause during our travels to Honor our Heroes.

22nd Annual Photography Contest

2011 Georgia National Fair

Displayed on the red and yellow covered tables are the 795 entries that were judged on Saturday, September 24, 2011 as the Photography Contest Staff prepared for the 2011 Georgia National Fair. These images were entered in the Advanced and Open Divisions of the Photography Contest.

The 975 Beginner Entries will be judged on Saturday, October 1, 2011. In order to participate in this contest you must reside within the State of Georgia.

I, the originator of this Blog am also a Part-Time employee of the Georgia National Fair. I am the Contest Chairperson. In 1999 I started working for the Fair as a Picture Handler. I have served as the Photo Contest Chairperson for the last two or three years. It is always interesting to meet the photographers and to view their work when they turn them. The show is pre-judged and all the entries are on display, along with the earned awards when the Fair opens. This year the Fair will open on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 4:00 P.M. right after the opening ceremonies.

Of course I would urge everyone who is interested in the Hobby of Photography to visit the Fair and to view the 1770 Photography Entries. In addition the Fair is always a wholesome adventure for citizens from all over Georgia to attend.

Ingress Lane Repair

During the past two or three years we have heard lot about "Shovel Ready" projects to be completed to improve the economic stability of our United States of America. I would like to report that the Sub-Division where I reside is doing a small part to restore America to the greatness that we all once knew.

We recently let a contract with a small business firm operated by Mike Cox for the repair of the Cobblestone Street that borders our Entrance Gardens. The repair was completed today, September 27th, 2011 on time and on budget.

Prior to the official Drive opening ceremonies I took this picture at 7:54:15 A.M. so that we would have an official record of what the project looked like prior to the opening ceremony.

Another view to display the new patterned Cobblestone in comparision with the existing Cobblestone.

Hopefully the installation of this "French Drain" style drainage system will prevent water collecting under the Cobblestone and allow the repaired Cobblestone Ingress to remain intact for many years to come.

Here you are viewing the Contractor removing the traffic diversion markers that were employed during the repair project.

As you can ascertain here the opening ceremonies were quite informal and required no dignitaries to be present. This celebration did observe all safety regulations and the Ingress portion of the Weatherby Drive was officially opened at 8:01:17 A.M.

"Ask Your Doctor If Your Heart Is Healthy Enough For Sexual Activity!!"

"Seek Medical Attention If You Experience An Erection Which Last Longer Than Four Hours!!"

I am confident that each of us has heard these statements during the 4:00 P.M. through 8:00 P.M. I have noted that they are usually presented during the evening news.

What I am waiting for next is for my GrandSon or my GrandDaughter to ask me what these statements mean. I would submit that our young people quickly pick up on phrases that they hear when they observe the electronic media.

While I realize that these statements are essential to see certain products I would suggest that the "pill" makers/marketers consider how they would inform their own Children and/or Grandchildren of what these statements mean.

While I support appropriate sex education for children, I am aware that these statements are made to promote the sale of "pills" to help males continue to be teenagers during their sexual activity.

This is not a crisis that requires more laws from our Federal Government; but it does point out the need for a "common sense" approach toward marketing.

We all can be sure that young citizens as young as four years old hear these statements and probably wonder what all of this means. Someday they will ask their parents, grandparents or caregivers. I am waiting for the day some five or six year old ask their School Teacher what these comments mean.

In summary, Children are alert and hear a lot. Children are always ready to ask questions!! I suspect that my answer when these questions are asked of me will relate to the fact that older males need assistance, in some cases, to allow them to function. Depending on their age I will go into detail.

One thing for certain, my own Grandchildren reside on a farm so they witness first hand the activity of "boy cows" as they interact with the heifers and cows.

Certainly something to consider. Are we providing too much information?

Customer Service

Middle Georgia Medical Complex

Yes, I was seeing red when I departed this Medical Complex several days ago. I was the duty driver because my spouse was informed that it was a requirement for someone else to do the driving due to the nature of the procedure.

As is normal for a lot for medical organizations, we were given a Customer Survey to complete regarding our visit.

All of the Survey Questions received positive responses except for the two I will discuss here.

Question 2: "I was treated in a caring courteous manner."

The reponse sent to the Medical Organization included these comments:

I was the driver required to be with my spouse for this procedure. We did arrive ahead of the appointed time. No problem. We read the sign that indicated that no matter the arrival time (or words) in that manner, we would be processed by the appropriate Doctor in the order of arrival. We appreciated the fact that different Doctors were using the Center.

After a considerable period of waiting with no information flow we were informed upon visiting the “desk” that the "Good Doctor" was late. It would have been very appropriate for the Office Staff to share this information. However, we were led to believe that the "Good Doctor" did not even tell the Center Staff of his problem regarding his arrival time.

As you can appreciate, that attitude is not the best for generating “Customer Appreciation” regarding the delay of the procedure, much less postive responses to any Customer Survey.

We did arrive well ahead of the appointment time of 10:30 A. M. After additional liaison with the “office staff, A Nurse visited me, the Duty Driver to carefully inform me that I could be at the bedside of my spouse prior to the procedure and that soon the "Good Doctor "would be executing the procedure with my Bride. At that point I indicated that it would serve no useful purpose to be in the same space with the "Good Doctor" and my spouse. I was properly upset and I had determined that it would serve no useful purpose to “vent my anger” to the Doctor prior to him executing the procedure.

I was finally informed while I participated in normal “Waiting Room” activities that the "Good Doctor" was about to commence the procedure. I made a note of the time and ascertained that it was now about 13:43 P.M. Certainly not very near 10:30 A.M. At no time was I told that I could escape the “Waiting Room” to procure proper nourishment.

I believe that it was about 14:07 P.M. when I was informed that the procedure was concluded and that I should proceed to the after care room to learn of the results and receive the appropriate care instructions regarding my spouse.

Question Number 8 on the Survey Form stated: "The Center personnel were organized."

These statements were submitted in response to this statement:

While the nursing staff and the center receptionist staff were well organized, I am of the old school. The Doctor must have been unorganized, or at the least did not care about the Patient and/or the “Required Duty Driver” by his inattention to detail regarding the necessity to keep the Office Staff/Nursing Staff informed about his cavalier attitude toward providing “Excellent Customer Service” to both the Patient and the Required Duty Driver.

By the way, I can appreciate the need for a Duty Driver for patients undergoing this procedure. What I can not appreciate is the cavalier attitude of the Doctor who was guilty of not providing timely information to the Office Staff and/or the Nursing Staff at the “Medical Organization that provided the testing" on my spouse.

I can also appreciate the fact that a Doctor may be late for pre-established times set to perform procedures; however I think that I am sure that the “Good Doctor” had/has an appropriate communications device where he could have communicated this lateness to the Receptionist/Nurses at the Medical Organization.

I would suggest that I suspect that the “Good Doctor” is in a partnership with others and that they probably own this Medical Organization . As such the “Good Doctor” in this situation certainly did not generate “good thoughts” on the part of the “Duty Driver for the Patient.

I submit these comments for the improvement of service and the upgrading of communications between the Doctors at this Medical Organization and the patients who must have their procedures performed here.

As an adult who decided to live in Middle Georgia in 1981, I am not ready to accept what I consider inadequate service/poor customer service from any organization that receives “funds” based on my citizenship in this Great United States of America.

By the way, this Medical Organization was very prompt in informing my spouse on the Friday prior to the procedure that we should bring a check in the sum of $__.___ to cover the cost that would not be covered by Insurance.

In this regard, this Medical Organization receives “high marks” for being timely, accurate and efficient. It is regrettable that the situation was not the same on Monday, September 19th, 2011.

Maybe, after this Customer Service Survey is received and hopefully read by all concerned; that the level of customer care and service will be enhanced so that future patients and/or their respective Duty Drivers will not be victimized such as was recently experienced.

Again, timely communications would have improved this “negative survey report.” Additionally, I am certainly aware that Doctors have emergencies that require priority treatment be rendered to needy patients. That, however does not prevent timely information flow in this the era of “rapid digital communications.”

It is not my purpose in posting this Blog Entry to recommend corrective procedures in as much as I suspect that the appropriate Staff/Doctors are well aware of what needs to be done. However, I hope that corrective actions can be accomplished in a timely and effective manner.

I realize that corrective actions regarding improper and/or poor customer service cannot be implemented unless the customer addresses the issue/s. Such is the purpose of this Post.
